The days outlined in the action guide aren’t really days. Take as long as you want with each day and take a few months to choose your topic and figure out how you are going to make money.

If you already have a domain name in mind – forget it. There is probably a better one unless you have chosen it using brainstormit.

Feeling overwhelmed is common when you are learning something new. Just stop and go do something else and come back. Feeling overwhelmed and frustrated won’t help. It is just an old pattern that is trying to keep you stuck from achieving your goals even though it is very real.

Ask for help in the forums.

It may actually take a few different site concepts and setting up sites before you get one that you can make a living on. Don’t give up just because one thing failed.

Work on only one site at a time until you get 500 visitors a day and have C2 implemented that will continue to build pages for you automatically.

Submit your site to the search engines as soon as you create your homepage even if it isn’t finished.

Set up the blog/rss system asap and when you build or update pages add the posts to your blog. If you are working on a page for awhile don’t add it to the blog for awhile.

If you are working on a particular keyword and have a few pages that use it submit it to the blog together.

If you are not able to work on your site, just go in and rebuild a few pages at a time using the priority build to get the search engines interested.

The basic formula is to just create pages and get backlinks. Do this and you can’t fail.

Get to understand the keywords and what they actually mean to your site and learn how to use them correctly.

Keep reading the action guide over and over. After you get your site up keep reading it because there is always something new going on.

Making Money with Adsense isn’t always as easy as one would think. Adsense is Google’s ad program for publishers that allows people to put their Google Ads on your site. Someone pays for the ads through Google Adwords. You will get some unknown and small percentage of what that person pays Google for the ad.

To make money with Google Adsense you really need a lot of content and a lot of visitors. I would guess at least 300 pages and 500 visitors a day to make probably around $500 a day from what I have seen but it also depends on your keywords and what people are paying for those keywords and how relevant the ads are to your pages.

There are some things that you can do to improve Click Through Rates (CTR):

Use section targeting

Place the ads in strategic places

Test different color text and link formats in the ads

Use ad filtering to weed out unwanted ads and link farm ads

Don’t count just on making money from Adsense. The amount you make also varies with the ups and downs of the economy and how much traffic you get.

You can also make money by writing your own ebook, creating your own product or selling affiliate products on your site.

Choosing your site concept is one of the most important steps in creating an online business. Site Build it! has the tools to help you choose the best niche for you.

Day 2 of the Action Guide is all about how to do just that. Using the free keyword tools first you can get an idea of how many people are searching for the same things you are interested in. The first part of the process is about collecting and analyzing the data and just getting your brain – brainstorming.

There are guidelines in the action guide as to what numbers to look for as far as what will give you the best chances of success, but I think that your best chances are creating a site about something that you are most passionate about.

It may be hard to find that out if you haven’t thought about it before. So many people think that work is about just working and not about doing something that you really love. Your passion will take you farther than just having the numbers that look profitable.

Choosing your site concept may take a few months or you may also have to just try a few things and create a few sites before you get to one that really clicks and gets results for you.

So what do you like to do or talk about? What do you love talking about? What gets you inspired or up on your soap box? What did you want to be when you were a kid? What do you know about now that you don’t think is valuable or enough to create a website on?

If you don’t think that you have anything to write about or do a site on, you have probably been too caught up in just getting by or have been working to long doing something you don’t like or don’t feel appreciated. It may take time to undo that type of thinking and being.

What you are doing when you are choosing a site concept is choosing a different way of life. You are choosing to pursue your dreams instead of just dreaming about them. You are choosing to feel more alive.

Choosing the best domain for your website requires that you pick your site concept out after finalizing your plan on how to layout your site and how you will make money with it. The best domain name is a combination of the best keywords of your site concept. It should say what you do and where you do it if it is a local business. It should be easy for the web surfer to know immediately what it is that you do.

People search online for a solution to their problem or information on a specific topic. They are looking for answers. When they find a site that tells them there is a good chance that they will find what they are looking for just by looking at the domain name there is a good chance for them to click on your site.

I think one of the things SBI! overlooks is showing people how to choose the best domain and concept for their website when they are a service business like for a massage website. You already have a site concept – whatever service you provide. The best domain will be what service you provide and where you do it if it is a local business.

Looking for cutesy domain names while it may be fun, people won’t know what you do. While it can be done in the long run using your main keywords on other pages, it can help make the process go faster by choosing a name like massageyourcity.com or seattlecpa.com or seattleestatelawyer.com (That of course is only what I have found and would love to hear others opinions on choosing the best domain name for your website.)

How to make money online with Site Build it! is the topic of Day 4 of the SBI! Action Guide.

There are many ways to make money. SBI! recommends that you first take a look at using Google Adsense. That is a program from Google that allows you to place their advertisements on your webpages. When people click on the ads you will get paid a very, very small portion of the amount that the advertiser paid Google for the ad. How much? We don’t ever really know how much per click. The idea is to find a high paying keyword and create a website around that.

One of the things that I have found is that using Google Adsense requires that you have a fair amount of traffic and pages. I have a few sites that I run adsense on and have found that on average you need about 300 pages of content and 500 visitors a day to make probably around $500 a month or so. That is just a rough estimate and you can’t really ever know. The key is that the more pages and traffic you have the more you can make. Making money with Google Adsense requires getting a lot of traffic and/or creating a lot of pages. It can help hold you over and keep you going until your site gets enough traffic.

There are also alternatives to adsense that work like they do paying per click. Chitka.com , contextual advertising programs like Kontera.com are also similar. Again it requires volumes of traffic and pages.

I personally have been using adsense since 2004 or so and while it has made me a nice supplement to my income, I think if I was going to start another SBI! site I would focus on selling affiliate products because you can make much more per sale. That is also the downfall is that you have to make the sale. You don’t just get paid for the click like you do with adsense.

I am actually playing around with that idea of making money with affiliate programs using Wordpress blogs. I can get about any keyword found within a few weeks using Wordpress. I don’t think that Wordpress is good for adsense ads because of the layout of most blog themes. There is usually too much on a page for people to click on so they keep surfing on your site. The way the adsense also shows up on the posts and not on the full page makes the number of ad impressions very low. You have to put the ads on the top part of the template or in the side template which I have found to have a low click through rate. I think it does better on a page with just a left navigation bar just like the Site Build it! basic blockbuilder template.

There are other ways to make money such as getting referral fees for services such as in a local guide or travel site when they refer people to hotels and restaurants.

You can also create your own Ebook to sell and let other people sell it. I am working on that right now with my site www.massage-career-guides.com. I have an ebook written on what you need to know about becoming a massage therapist and am writing another one about finding a job in massage. The thing I think will make all the difference is teaching people how to promote your ebook through affiliate programs. I will talk about that in another post.

This is the basic Site Build it! mantra. I thought that I understood the whole process and what it really means but then about once or twice a year I go back through the SBI! Action Guide and the meaning of it becomes even more profound each time.

You will see this so much all throughout the SBI! process. You will get sick of hearing about it and think that you know what it means. You will think that you are doing it. It seems easy enough…

Build high quality content for search engines and your readers.

Get Traffic by following the process of creating content, optimized pages and getting backlinks to your website

Pre-sell – I always hate this word pre-sell. Pre-sell is just about building trust with your readers. It is just providing information in a way that makes your reader say – “Wow, I want that!” or “If this person can do it so can I”. The word sell always conjures up a picture of ‘yuk – I don’t want to sell, I don’t know how to sell, I hate selling… It is just about sharing what you know about something. Your passion will shine through.

Monetize- Yes! the making money part! Following the previous steps it is almost inevitable that the money will follow like the old saying ” Do what you love and the money will follow”. The doing what you love also needs to include concrete action steps – one by one which is what SBI! is all about.

You won’t get rich over night or even in a year. (Maybe in 6 months or a few months you can create an additional stream of income if you work at it full time.)

I am sure there are other ways to be successful online like just using article marketing to promote affiliate products or spending a good chunk of money on programmers who create an really nice looking site and paying to get it found.

What do you think about this idea that you can just make money by following

CONTENT TRAFFIC PRESELL MONETIZE

There are many different keyword research tools but the best tool is actually your brain. Think about how people would actually search for your site/product/keyword right before they make the purchase or sign up for something. That is the best keyword for your site concept and your pages.

You can start your keyword research with some of the free keyword research tools offered online. There are also some really pricey ones too. If you are researching keywords to figure out the main concept of your online business begin with very broad terms like weight loss, diet, dog training, massage therapy and start with the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. This will give you an idea of how many people are searching for these words or concepts. (We actually don’t know how accurate this tool really is since it is created by Google for people creating advertisements with them. That is the way with any keyword research tool really. That is why your brain is actually the best tool of all.)

Some other tools to use to research a concept for your online business is to use things like Google Trends to see what has happened over time with a concept and to also see what currently is the latest trend.

Another thing to look at is places like www.amazon.com and www.ebay.com and look for their hot sellers sections. You can get some ideas of what is selling best. Take a look at places like www.ezinearticles.com and the dmoz.org directory to see what seems to be the most popular sections or articles.

Many people are looking to the internet to start an online business instead of trying to find jobs or in addition to their jobs. Jobs today just aren’t all that they were made out to be. So many work just to get by rather than to feel alive.

There is a lot to learn if you want to start an online business but it can be done with time, patience and doing your research and testing. It doesn’t happen overnight. It can happen within a few months if you are working on it full time if you want it to.

Here is a list of things to learn and do to start an online business:

Think about 3-5 different topics/hobbies or special interests and knowledge you have. Start doing some keyword research on these topics to see what others are thinking about or wanting in the topics that you have chosen.

Do keyword research to determine how many websites there are out there that are using your keywords in their pages. The idea is to get a sense of what your competition will be.

Do research on the top 10 sites providing the info you are thinking about.

Narrow your topic down to one topic to focus on for now.

Begin planning how you will make money on this topic.

Use the keyword research to layout your site plan and navigation options.

Choose the best domain name based on your keyword research. It should include the words that look like it will give you the best results.

Figure out what your most wanted response is and learn how to write to pre-sell or win your readers trust. You do that by providing high quality content – or a solution to their problem or question.

Start creating pages on your website that are optimized for the search engines. You will have to learn how to do that. It is fairly straight forward once you get the hang of it.

Create an xml sitemap and submit it to the major search engines.

After you get about 30 pages up on your site start creating a plan to get backlinks to your website. It helps build traffic and credibility for search engine rankings. You can use article marketing, directory listings, posting on forums and blogs and link exchange programs.

Analyze your traffic patterns and keyword searches to maximize on them or adjust your plan.

Implement your monetization plan when you have about 100 visitors a day coming regularly to your website.

Keep adding content and getting back links

Go on vacation!
